Michael C. Cappiello, 67, of Weehawken, NJ, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2022, at home surrounded by his loving family. Michael said that he knew cancer would eventually win, "but cancer didn't know the fight it had in store".
Born in East Harlem's Italian neighborhood on July 13, 1954, to the late Julius and Delia Cappiello, Michael was raised in Maywood, NJ before moving to Weehawken. His professional life involved working on theater sets, in art galleries, and managing buildings in Manhattan's West Village before becoming a commercial real estate appraiser. Michael leveraged his expertise to serve his community as a long-standing member of the Weehawken Rent Leveling Board, retiring in 2021. He was so proud of his numerous appraisal jobs that whenever he would drive past one he would point and exclaim, "You see that building? I appraised it!" – a running joke that his family carries on to this day.
Like his father before him, Michael was the consummate family man and a champion for his children and sister, Gina. He taught them how to find a good garage sale, craft an antipasto platter, park a car in Chinatown, and fix a broken toilet – but most importantly, he taught them to love openly and laugh constantly.
Michael also loved to garden, tending to his yard with great care and attention, the same way in which he tended to his family. He enjoyed relaxing with a good book, a cappuccino, and a cigar while looking out onto the New York City skyline from his patio. His incredible sense of humor, paired with his jovial laugh, raised the spirits of everyone around him. It was his humor and charm that first attracted his wife, Victorianne Pizzuta. They bonded over their shared heritage and a mutual love of the arts, imparting these values onto their children.
Survivors include his cherished wife Victorianne, loving son Michael and his spouse, Jennie, loving daughter Giuliana and her fiancé, Andrew, and his adoring sister Gina.
Michael is now at rest. His family holds him close and hopes to find within themselves the same humor and charm that he exuded every day – always with a wink, and always with a smile.
A funeral prayer service will be offered on Saturday, April 2, beginning at 11:00 AM at Saint Ann Roman Catholic Church, 704 Jefferson St., Hoboken, NJ.
For those desiring, and per Michael's wishes, please consider donations in lieu of flowers to the NAACP (http://naacp.org/donate) or the Audobon Society at (Audobon.org).
