Michael, affectionately known as “Mike Mania”, was born in Brooklyn, grew up in the Bronx, NY in the Edenwald Housing Development and later lived in West New York, NJ. He graduated from Harry S Truman HS, where he ran track and played football. He received a scholarship to attend Buffalo University and later attended Hunter College.
Mike built a career in asset protection and loss prevention, where he also acquired his private investigator’s license. He worked for Sony Corporation for 20 years before becoming a stay at home father.
Mike travelled extensively, with the highlight being the Door of No Return in Ghana. He was an avid Terry Brooks reader, with an extensive collection. He loved photography, loved to fish and axe throw with his younger brother Corey, and playing video games. Mike also wrote collections of short stories, including 2 unpublished comics, and was known to make up bed stories on the fly; but what Mike loved the most was culinary arts. He would concoct elaborate meals using his own recipes documenting them with his camera. He was a grill master and would grill anything from bison to an onion and even bull frog legs. He was a dedicated carnivore but fortunately discovered vegetables later in life.
Mike was committed to family, making sure that everyone was taken care of and pushed them to achieve their highest potential.
Mike leaves behind a legacy of love, courageousness, adventure and laughter. His sarcasm, trademark smirk and ‘Gilmore’ eyebrow quirk leaves an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.
Michael’s spirit lives on in his wife Mary and their daughter Zinnia, his mother and father Virginia and Tommy Gilmore, his big sister Deirdre, brother-in-law Garfield and nephew Jahvel, His younger sister Stacie, his younger sister Thomasina, brother in-law Rich and nephews Tommy and Ricky, and his younger brother and best friend Corey and partner Evelyn, nephews Joseph, Mason and Xavier and niece Amber.
He is also survived in his aunts and numerous cousins.
Services to be held at a later date.
