Sally Ann “Nanny” La Morte, 88, of Union City, passed away peacefully at home “at a quarter
of eight” in the morning on September 1, 2021.
Sally was born on February 2, 1933 to Anna and Emile Viaud of Jersey City, NJ. She was the
youngest of six daughters. She attended Dickinson High School and went on to work in the
clerical field until the age of 80. Sally retired (kicking and screaming) as Senior Assessing Clerk
in the Union City Tax Assessor’s Office after 20 plus years of service. She was a fixture on 3rd
Street where she resided much of her life, even serving for a stint as her district Committee
Woman.
Formerly married to Anthony La Morte Sr. of Union City, they had five children: Anthony,
Michele, Michael, Jacalyn, and Joseph.
Sally enjoyed cross stitching, linzer tarts, tea and good tableside gossip. Other pastimes include
doctor visits, hospital stays and self-diagnosis. She boasted her New England Pride where she
lived for a time claiming the Red Sox and Patriots as her favorite teams (despite her family’s
wishes). Always dressed to the nines, she loved shopping for clothes, makeup, and most of all
collectables, all of which she generously shared with her children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Sally adored Winnie-the-Pooh, Tony Bennett and Robert De Nero-- “He can
put his shoes under my bed anytime.”
Nanny was a pillar of strength and support to four generations. To them she passed on her
endless generosity, love and wit. She will be cherished, dearly missed and never forgotten!
Think Pooh.
Sally was predeceased by her parents, sisters Maleska, Henritte, Anita, Meme, Harriet and her
beloved niece Adele. She is survived by her children: Anthony & wife Nancy, Michele, Michael,
Jacalyn & partner Sergio, and Joseph & wife Gloria. Also by her Grandchildren: Tara & husband
Daniel, Rachel & husband Jason, Anthony, Melissa & husband Jason, Robert & wife Jennifer,
Ashley & husband Yehuriz, Marcel & fiancé Heaven, Miles, and Emile. In addition her
Great-Grandchildren: Leneah, Silas, Sydney, Jalese, Analiese, Yehuriz Jr., Calvin, Derrick,
Keoni, Lyrik, Oak Lynne, Journie and Step Great-Grandchildren Shane, Tara and Haley.
Sally’s Life Celebration will include visiting at the Leber Funeral Home, 2000 Kennedy Blvd.,
Union City, N.J. on Tuesday September 7th from 4PM to 8PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at
Saint Anthony of Padua Church, 615 8th St., Union City, NJ on Wednesday September 8th at
