She arrived was born in Dallas, Texas (and briefly resided in Highland Park), but
soon moved to Houston... after short detours to Odessa, Lake Charles and
Longview. Her school years included being among the first to attend a new
school with Air Conditioning, Fondren Junior High. She went onto high school,
first at Westbury and then graduated from Bellaire.
Her college years started in Denton at North Texas State and once she decided
to go into nursing she moved onto the University of Texas in Austin, when it was
a truly weird and funky place. Her college studies were sprinkled with
soundtracks from the likes of Jerry Jeff Walker and Jimmy Buffet.
She finally earned her nursing degree in 1976 at the UT Health Science Center in Houston.
But bed pans and doctors did not suit her speed, so she moved into the
medical equipment sales side of health care. For the next 20 years she traveled
all around the state and across the country developing a wildly successful
network for medical device sales and distribution.
She retired as a Senior Vice President for San Antonio based, Kinetic Concepts Inc.
In the midst of this burgeoning career, in 1983, Alice discovered she had kidney disease.
Eventually, it progressed to where she required dialysis three times a week, every week.
Understandably many at this juncture would have chosen to retreat. Instead,
Alice chose to continue working full-time in a high pressure, fast paced sales
environment. She won countless awards for her hard work, all while waiting and
working towards a transplant.
It was a rocky journey, but she faced the challenge with fierce determination, an
indominable spirit and with unflinching resolution. She was surrounded and
supported by a loving husband and a devoted family, but she guided her own
star and charted her own course. It was during these years, that Alice took up
walking. If you were in her neighborhood at about 5:30 am nearly every day, you
would see her tearing up the streets as she walked her three miles a day in all
kinds of weather. It was a passion that sustained her for the rest of her life.
In 2000, her hard work at keeping up a measure of good health paid off and she
received a transplant. The donated organ came from a young man who had died
in a motorcycle accident. This new organ became a part of the family, so much
so that we named him it Elmo. Having a transplant was a gift that re-opened the
world to Alice and enriched her life and of those she loved.
Following her retirement Alice and her husband moved to Virginia for a few years
and then finally to San Antonio in 2009. Along the way she got to travel the world.
She is survived by her husband Steve, her sister Jean and her brothers, David
and Chris. Among her larger family are Amy, Kelle, Steven Cody and their 13
grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
