On May 24, 2026, our dearest Alice Perez, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away following a lengthy and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Her wish to spend her final days at home, surrounded by family and friends sharing love during her final days, was fulfilled.
Alice was born in 1949 in Brownsville, Texas and grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was the eldest of nine siblings, including six sisters and vowed to never live in a home with only one bathroom again.
In April 1965, she met the love of her life, Private George Perez, serving in the U.S. Army, on a blind double-date to see the Righteous Brothers in concert. She was shocked when George said he was going to marry her.
One year later, they were married in Corpus Christi and two days later, they traveled to Cologne-Delbruck, Germany where then Specialist Four George was posted for his military assignment. That was the marital beginning for both in a foreign country – quite an adjustment and experience far from her Texas-roots – living on love alone.
After returning stateside to their assignment at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Alice graduated from Lawton High School, Lawton, Oklahoma in May 1968; fulfilling a promise made to her parents to complete her education. This was not an easy task as she was also raising her one-year-old son, George Jr, at the time.
Thereafter, the couple was posted to many military assignments stateside and several tours in Germany including Ansbach, Nürnberg, Berlin, Munich and Itzehoe – but their favorite assignment was Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Alice was a devoted and attentive mother to her children, George Jr and Liesa, balancing discipline and high expectations with unconditional love and support.
She built an accomplished career in the commercial insurance industry as a Sales Account Manager, consistently exceeding her sales goals and often outperforming other regional managers. It was common to hear “it’s month end!” when looking for her near the end of each month, each quarter and particularly at year's end. She won numerous awards and trips to Portugal, Saint Thomas Virgin Islands and Hawaii. Of course, her favorite year was when she retired.
Upon retirement, Alice was able to spend more quality time with her family and grandchildren, Matthew and Sydnie, whom she adored. She focused on her health and often went to spin classes, walks with friends, and yoga. She devoted her free time by volunteering at the local USO and the Wounded Warrior’s Project.
Alice often proclaimed herself as the “official tagalong” when she accompanied George in his domestic and international business travel. When questioned by Customs and Border Protection officers on the purpose of her trip, her response was that “she’s the tagalong” – this always earned a smile from the agents. When not tagging along, she enjoyed ocean cruising which became one of her passions, particularly the transatlantic repositioning cruises.
Always with a book in hand or her iPad for games, she was a fierce competitor on Words with Friends, Scrabble, and Rummikub. Beating her at a game was a rare and memorable achievement, and if you managed it, you enjoyed the victory while you could—because she was unlikely to let it happen again anytime soon. An avid sports fan, she loved a variety of sports but particularly the Olympics, the Tour de France, the Dallas Cowboys, and Texas Longhorns' football and baseball. As a true-blue Cowboys fan, she endured the ups and mostly downs of each football season, but she remained optimistic every year. An avid UT baseball fan, even with her frequent stays at MD Anderson in Houston, it was imperative that she still watch her beloved Longhorns.
Moving to Bastrop, Texas in November 2013, it was in 2021 that Alice was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She faced the disease with great courage and determination. Impeccably dressed at every hospital treatment, she wanted everyone to know that she was still in control, still fighting, and still living with purpose despite her illness.
Alice leaves behind a family who will forever cherish her example, her strength, her elegance, her competitive spirit, and the deep love she gave so freely to those around her.
What began as young love in 1966 evolved into a remarkable marriage of nearly sixty years, with George and Alice sharing a life grounded in enduring affection, steadfast commitment, mutual respect, and dedication to family. To George she was lovely and radiant every single day.
Her Bastrop neighbors were of great support along with The Colony Lady "Yogis" who were unwavering in their love and friendship. We thank them dearly.
Any list of appreciation would be remiss without mentioning her daughter-in-law, Liz, and George’s sister, Angie, for their tremendous love, care, and support.
She is survived by her Parents, Antonio and Simona Salazar, her husband, George Perez, her son, George Perez, Jr., and her daughter, Liesa Perez.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Mathew Austin Perez and Sydnie Marie Perez. Her brother and sisters, Antonio Salazar, Jr., Raul Salazar, Irene Reyes , Grace Guillen, Norma Mikuovsky, Rose Ochoa, and Veronica Mondragon.
A Memorial Service and Visitation to celebrate Alice’s life will be held at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Rd, Universal City, Texas 78148 starting at 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Alice’s honor to MD Anderson Cancer Center or Hospice Austin, whose compassionate care meant so much to her and her family.
