Alma Carney

Alma Hammond Carney died of complications from Alzheimer’s Disease on August 2, a month after celebrating her 102nd birthday. Alma is survived by her sons, James Jr. and his wife Kathe, and William and his wife Tamra; grandchildren Teresa and her husband Tim, James III and his wife Deborah, Ryan, and Sean and his wife Maia; great grandchildren Jacob, Jaxon, Haley, Ryan, Jr., Trystan, Violet and Emmet. Born on July 2, 1915, Alma grew up on a tobacco farm in Bethel, North Carolina. She graduated from East Carolina University in 1935, beginning her teaching career during the great depression. She married her high school sweetheart, the late Col. James F. Carney, as he rushed off to war in the Pacific. Their final Air Force assignment was at San Antonio’s Randolph AFB in 1966. They also served in Hawaii, Ohio, Washington DC, Bermuda, New York and Nebraska. Alma lived in Windcrest for 15 years, serving on the Board of Directors at Windcrest United Methodist Church. She lived at the Army Residence Community for 29 years. A graveside service will be held on Thursday August 10 at 10:30 A.M. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
