Born February 7, 1922, in the City of Frankfort, Kansas, and raised in Beattie, Kansas, Larry was the oldest child of Ruth Samuelson and Fred William Hadorn. In 1942, she married Glen “Tom” Thomas in Columbus, Georgia. Larry traveled the world with Tom and the U.S. Air Force, graciously making friends and establishing homes whenever and wherever called upon, from Nebraska to England to the Pentagon, with many tours in Texas. As a family, they loved traveling, boating, laughing and gathering with friends and extended family. Larry and Tom retired to New Braunfels in 1981, became active in St. Paul Lutheran Church, and continued to travel. They moved to the Army Residence Community in San Antonio in 1994.
Larry got the nickname just before she got married. A friend of Tom’s couldn’t pronounce the name Lorene and said “You look like a Larry, so that’s what I’m going to call you.”
She will be deeply missed by those who remain, including daughter Kerry, son Hoyt, daughter-in-law N.J. Pierce, and grandson Michael Pierce; sisters Peggy McManus, Helen Sorensen and Mickie Dunne; and many beloved nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Marvin Leo Hadorn, her husband Tom, and her brothers-in-law.
A memorial celebration will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, November 20, 2014, at the Army Residence Community, 7400 Crestway, San Antonio. Interment will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio. The family wishes to thank all who helped care for Larry at the ARC. For those wishing to make a donation in Larry’s name, please consider the Army Residence Community Foundation or the charity of your choice.
