

LTG Beverley E. Powell, U.S. Army Retired, age 99 of San Antonio passed away July 5, 2011. He was born February 11, 1912 in Henderson, Kentucky to Davis E. and Bertie Mae (Evans) Powell. LTG Powell graduated from USMA, West Point, NY in 1936. In WWII, he took a FA Battalion into North Africa. He crossed into Italy and drove north eventually becoming LTG Patton’s G-1. After the war he returned to Ft. Sill, OK as Secretary of the Field Artillery School. His next stop was the Pentagon with the NATO Standing Group and then to London, England as Military Attaché to King George VI. He crossed the English Channel to Paris and worked for Gen Eisenhower in SHAPE. He then went to Ft. Campbell, KY as 11th ABN DIV FA Commander. His next Assignment was at the Pentagon and the NATO Standing Group; returned to Ft. Sill, OK to command the 1st Guided Missile Brigade; became AC of S G-3 in Eighth US Army Korea, returned to the US to Ft. Bragg, NC as, 18th ABN FA Commander and then went back to the Pentagon, this time as Deputy Chief of Staff OPNS to the Army Chief of Staff. While there he was responsible for the security and safety of the District of Columbia during MLK’s Million Man March on Washington. He was assigned to CONARC, Ft. Monroe, VA as DCofS, OPNS/TNG, followed by 2 ½ years as Commander, 101st ABN DIV at Ft. Campbell, KY. His next assignment was in Belgium as Secretary to the US Ambassador to NATO. His final duty was at Ft. Hood, TX as Commander III Corps with a short stint with the 5th US Army at Ft. Sam Houston, TX. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth “Missie’ Powell and her family; children, LTC Beverley E. Powell, Jr. and wife Linda, Anne Bishop Brooks, Eleanor Long Powell and Harry Charlton Powell; 8 grandchildren; and 12 Great Grandchildren. Graveside services and interment with full military honors will be Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at the Army Residence Community Cheever Chapel at 2:00 P.M.
