Buddy Jack Matthews, at the age of 75, went to be with our Lord on September 15, 2023. Buddy was born on March 9, 1948, in Dallas, Texas to parents John Kittrell Matthews and Effie Lee Stokes. Buddy joined the United States Marine Corp in January 1966. He served in Vietnam and Japan while with the Marines. Buddy met and married the love of his life, Chieko O’Hara in 1971 while serving in Japan. They had two children, Luke Kittrall Matthews and Buddy Jack Matthews, Jr. In February 1972, Buddy joined the Army and served in Korea, Japan, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. Buddy and his family left Japan and moved to Live Oak, Texas.
From June 1981 to June 1983 Buddy was an IG Inspector with the Health Services Command. He completed his military service, retiring from Fort Sam Houston in 1986.
Buddy entered Civil Service in April 1987 working at Troop Command Brooks Army Medical Center as an Awards Clerk. In 1988, he took over as the Installation Mail Manager for BAMC, and in 1994, he became Installation Mail Manager for Fort Sam Houston. Buddy served the United States honorably with a total of 20 years in the Marine Corps and US Army and 24 years employed with Civil Service.
Buddy loved playing golf, watching Texas Longhorn football, traveling with his wife, Chieko, and spending time with his sons and their families. He loved watching movies and was an avid reader. His love for his family was deep. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife Chieko Matthews of Live Oak, sons, Luke Kittrall Matthews (Alli) of San Antonio, Buddy Jack Matthews, Jr (Christina) of San Antonio. Grandchildren are Cameron Saunders Matthews of Seguin, Zephyr Matthews, of San Antonio, Hailey Washington of San Antonio, and Chloe and Deborah Matthews of San Antonio, He was the patriarch of our family, and all will greatly miss his love and devotion to us.
Funeral service will be at Fort Sam Houston cemetery (1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209) on October 16th at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to the American Lung Association.
