Born in Ranger, Texas she spent her younger years in Beeville, Tyler and San Antonio, Texas before graduating from Breckinridge High School. It was 1942 in the midst of WWII that she met the love of her life, Dan Mendel, who was on leave fighting in the Pacific Ocean aboard the USS McFarland.
They corresponded for two years while he served on the USS Heerman. In 1944 durning his second leave opportunity, Dan once again returned to San Antonio to marry Sherry. They were married for 75 years (until Dan’s passing in 2019) and lived what they always described as a fairytale life. As a Navy wife, she was blessed to travel the world especially enjoying the opportunity to live in Oslo, Norway.
After 32 years of service they returned to San Antonio where she and Dan decided to further their education and attended what was then called Southwest Texas State University. Sherry earned a Master’s degree in Art Education, but after graduation worked as a reading assistant at St Mary’s Hall until her retirement. She had an amazing eye for color, texture and design and always enjoyed decorating her home.
Traveling was Sherry’s passion, and they did so extensively throughout the United States collecting souvenirs and so many stories along the way. As their golden years approached Dan and Sherry moved to the Army Retirement Community (ARC) where they lived for over 30 years until her recent passing. During that time, Sherry served in various volunteer positions especially enjoying her role as an ARC Angel and member of the ARC Chapel.
Sherry was cherished by her family and friends and always described as a beautiful woman of character, who had a servants heart, loved her Lord, and loved her family deeply and unconditionally. She is survived by her only daughter, Sharon Mendel Richardson and son-in-law Charles Richardson; grandson Cody Richardson and wife Wendye Richardson; grandson, Charles Daniel Richardson and wife Alissa Richardson, great granddaughter Reagan Mendel Richardson, and great grandson Grayson Daniel Richardson; sister-in-law Jody Mendel and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family extends their heart felt appreciation to VITAS Hospice Care, ARC Eleventh Hour support group, ARC Assisted Living Staff and family and friends for their outpouring of prayers, love and support. You are forever in our hearts!
