Delbert, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a friend to all he met, passed away on June 8, 2023 leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He was born on December 02, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, surrounded by the love of his parents and two younger siblings, a brother, Jimmy and a sister, Karen.
In his early years, Del answered the call of duty and served briefly during the Korean conflict, displaying courage, dedication to his country and a gift for playing exceptional softball who both shone in the batter's box while excelling in the demanding role of a catcher. While in the service he picked up a new nickname, Pete. Upon returning, fate brought him face to face with the love of his life. Pete met Bernardine at her parent’s farm house and a connection was made that was both instant and undeniable. They embarked on a beautiful journey together, creating a life filled with love and devotion.
Pete and Bernie made their home in San Antonio, where they established deep roots and became cherished members of the community while maintaining very close ties to their families. Del was known for his warm and welcoming nature, effortlessly making friends wherever he went. His genuine interest in others, his ability to spin a tale, his kind-heartedness, and his ability to brighten any room with his smile left a lasting impact on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.
As a father, Pete embraced the joys and responsibilities of raising his two boys, Mark and Scott. He provided unwavering love, guidance, and support, imparting valuable life lessons and instilling within them a sense of integrity and compassion. His dedication to his family was unwavering, and his presence was a source of strength and inspiration.
In the role of grandfather, Del found immense joy. He delighted in the laughter and love shared with his three grandchildren, two granddaughters, Michelle and Courtney, and a grandson, Tyler. He was an active and engaged presence in their lives, attending their school events, celebrating their accomplishments, and imparting wisdom and unconditional love.
In his later years, Pete became a great-grandfather, experiencing the joy of three great-granddaughters. He cherished each moment spent with them, creating treasured memories that will be passed down through the generations. His love and affection will forever be etched in their hearts.
Pete's life journey was not without hardship, after his beloved Bernardine developed dementia five years ago, he recently experienced her profound loss. Though deeply saddened by her long goodbye and recent passing, Pete found strength in the love they shared and carried her memory with him, continuing to honor her through his actions and the love he extended to others.
Del leaves behind a profound impact on the lives of those who knew him. His warmth, kindness, and unwavering friendship will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of crossing his path.
He is survived by his brother, Jim, sister, Karen, two sons, Mark (Lisa) and Scott (Melissa), his three grandchildren, Michelle, Courtney and Tyler, his three great-grandchildren, Rian, Addison and Mason, and a wide circle of friends and loved ones who were touched by his friendship.
In honoring the life and legacy of Pete, let us carry forward his kindness, compassion, and love. May we embrace the values he exemplified, and may his memory serve as a reminder to cherish our loved ones, befriend those around us, and make a positive difference in the world.
May Del now rest in eternal peace, reunited with his beloved Bernardine.
