Donald Dwight Sonney, 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones in the early morning hours of June 25, 2026, in Cibolo, Texas. He dedicated his life to caring for others, serving his country for 22 years active duty and 14 years civil service in the United States Air Force.
Donald’s life was defined by hard work and commitment. As a young man, he chose to leave school to help support his family and at 18 he married the love of his life, Carol. Their journey of nearly seven decades is a beautiful testament to loyalty and devotion. It is undeniable proof that true love does exist. Donald’s military career allowed him to travel the globe, live on three continents, and experience cultures far different from where he was born in rural Arkansas. After many years of service his last deployment was to Randolph Air Force Base. He and Carol settled in Schertz, and then later moved to Cibolo, where he became a member of the Country Church in Marion.
Regardless of his location, Donald’s roots ran deep and he never stopped talking about Arkansas. He was an avid Razorback and St Louis Cardinal fan, and he never shied away from telling you when they were having a bad season. In his free time, he loved playing golf, watching sports, telling stories, and indulging his sweet tooth (especially Carol’s homemade chocolate rolls).
Donald was a natural jokester, he loved telling his grandsons he was born in a cotton patch. He was always cracking jokes and bringing smiles to everyone's face, even in the most serious situations.
Above all, Donald was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife Carol, his daughter Susan (Russ) and his son Michael (Griselda). He was a proud grandfather to Jacob (Lindsay), Taylor (Renate) and Wesley (Minnie) and a great-grandfather to Leah, Dean, and his “Little Dude” Alex. His family will forever treasure the laughter, unforgettable stories, and unconditional love he brought into their lives.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the San Antonio and South Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Road, Universal City, Texas 78148.
