Geneva Lucile Hughes, age 85, of Converse, Texas was called to Heaven on August 18, 2024. She was blessed with life on February 8, 1939 to James Patricious and Orana Bertha (Dunlap) Hughes of Herington, Kansas. As a child, her favorite times were spent riding her Sorel Horse, “Beauty”, over the rolling hills of wheat on her family’s farm. Geneva is the last of a long ancestral line of proud Kansas farmers.
A dedicated and devout Catholic, her steadfast faith was her life. A member of Saint John Neumann, formerly of Saint Thomas More Parish, She was a proud member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Geneva was an eager participant in R.C.I.A at St John Neumann. She was a true prayer warrior, who was an excellent seamstress and an avid crocheter. Whenever she was able, she enjoyed nature by spending hours and hours in her lovely gardens.
While at Brooke Army Medical Center, an award was created to acknowledge and reward her above and beyond service to the patients of BAMC. She had served as a registered nurse for 40 years, helping patients and medical staff alike.
Geneva Hughes was particularly blessed by the friends she made at church and in her neighborhood. In her later years, she was very blessed by the friends who helped her maintain her independence for as long as possible, which was incredibly important to her. Her friends, Eric Skinner and Ron Poland brought blessings to Geneva every one of the many times they helped her at her homes.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Orana Hughes; her 2 brothers, Charles and James Phillip Hughes; her 3 sisters, Sharon Hughes, Marilyn Hughes Hurt, and Veronica Hughes Walker. Those left to carry on her memory in their hearts are her daughters, Mary Montgomery (Lee) Buckalew and Anne Montgomery Cheek Morris; her grandchildren: Andrew Cheek, Jacob Morris, Drake Morris, LeighAnna Buckalew, Marissa Buckalew, Jesse Buckalew, and Larkyn Buckalew; along with 6 great grandchildren, 3 nephews, 5 nieces, and 2 cousins, all whom she cherished dearly.
A very heartfelt Thanks to Janice Stolle and Carol Braun, who were amazingly faithful friends. Geneva especially loved Imelda Garcia, whom she called her ‘Special Angel.’ The family would like to extend a special thank you to the caring staff of Esplanade Gardens for providing a safe and loving environment for our mom and grandmother in her final years.
