Helen Marie Kethan, age 86, of San Antonio, TX, passed from this life on Sunday, June 17, 2018. Helen was born in Damon, Texas on November 5, 1931 to the Reverend Richard and Myrtle Weber. Helen graduated from Texas Lutheran College in 1953. Her first teaching job was in Ganado, where she taught biology and P.E. She was also the girls high school basketball coach-it’s believed this is where she developed her love of basketball. Helen was a huge San Antonio Spurs fan! Helen began teaching in San Antonio in 1959, where she was employed for over 30 years by the Northeast Independent School District. Helen retired in 1992. To keep busy she enjoyed painting, gardening, and volunteering with the St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary. Helen was happiest when she was involved with her church. She enjoyed bible studies, writing articles for the Church Chat, delivering Meals on Wheels, crocheting prayer shawls, tacking quilts for Lutheran World Relief, cooking meals for the Young at Heart group, and being involved with the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She authored “The History of Beitel Lutheran: 100 Years,” which documented the life of her beloved church. Helen also loved to travel. She became involved with the San Antonio chapter of Friendship Force, traveling to Germany, Costa Rica, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Peru, Japan, and Canada. Finally, Helen was a loving grandma who delighted in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen is survived by her sister, Betty Ganske, of Katy, TX; Children, Roxane Mancuso (Gary) of South Padre Island, TX, Kris Bishop of Rosanky, TX, Jon Pape (Susie) of Ganado, TX, Alan Kethan (Debbie) of Columbus, TX, Morris Kethan Jr. (Christi) of Richland, WA.; 12 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Morris Kethan.
Visitation will be at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Road, Universal City, TX on Sunday, July 1, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Helen’s Funeral Service will be at Beitel Memorial Lutheran Church, 2515 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218 on Monday, July 2, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Interment is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, TX.
