Biography

Hilda Jean McDannald Cantrell, 80, was our beloved “Sweets.” She was a wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who inspired others with her “go get ‘em” attitude, strength, humor and overwhelming, unconditional love for family.
She found the love of her life, Jesse, 57 years ago. Every day since, they had a marriage that movies are made of. Together, they traveled the world and lived in places like… Florida, Germany, Oregon, Illinois, the Philippines, Michigan, Okinawa, England and ultimately landed in Texas. In all, “not too bad for a girl from Chapin.”
Hilda and her two sisters Nadine and Mary loved each other immensely. Side-by-side, they seemed to morph into one person and even had their own language at times. She loved every single moment of time spent with them and couldn’t wait for the next occasion when she could see them. While distance may have separated them, phone calls kept them close.
As a mother to Lola, David and Donna, she was truly an inspiration who lead by example. Because of the person she was, we wanted to be better people and make her proud. She was our strength, our counselor, our comic relief; the one to call when we needed advice from “Mom.”
“Sweets” was the kind of grandma who loved her grandchildren dearly. She looked forward to texting, talking, skyping/facetiming and seeing them whenever she could. Her heart overflowed every time she was with them or talked to them over the phone. Pride is not a strong enough word to express how she felt about her grandchildren.
On the morning of April 9, 2019, our hearts were broken. We lost a wife, mother, Sweets, sister, and friend. The hole that we have will never be filled, but the extraordinary times we had with her are memories we will cherish forever.
“We can, we will… and WE ARE!”
