

Jerry spent his childhood moving throughout Texas and New Mexico before joining the United States Air Force in 1955. Following his military service, he built a distinguished career as an Air Traffic Controller with the Federal Aviation Administration. A lifelong learner, Jerry earned degrees in History from Sam Houston State University and remained an avid reader, historian, traveler, and storyteller throughout his life.
Jerry was known for his remarkable memory, his deep faith, and his genuine interest in people. He loved preserving family history, sharing stories, and celebrating the milestones of those he loved. His favorite reflection on life was a simple question he often asked: “Haven’t I had a good life?”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Bessie Shepard; his first wife of 43 years, Elizabeth Kellar Shepard; and several beloved siblings.
Jerry is survived by his devoted wife, Astrida Shepard; his son, Jerry N. Shepard and wife Kathleen; his daughter, Lisa Kulka and husband Jim; grandchildren Sunni, Lynsi, and Nathan Shepard, Benjamin, William, and Samuel Kulka, and Matthew Lester; his brothers J.A. Shepard and Tommy Shepard; his sisters Joy Platte and Jan Kay Blakely; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Jerry's life was defined by gratitude, love, curiosity, and kindness. His stories, laughter, and unwavering appreciation for life's blessings will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, from 10:00am to 11:00am with Funeral Service to follow from 11:00am to 12:00pm at First Baptist Church of Universal City, Peace Auditorium, 1401 Pat Booker Rd, Universal City, TX 78148.
A Committal Service with Military Honors will take place from 2:15 pm to 2:35 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, Shelter #2, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
