He was born on Governors Island, NY to Sergeant John Jones and his wife Anneliese. He and his sister, Ann, grew up across three continents as Sergeant Jones served the Army in Europe, Japan, and the United States. They settled in San Antonio, Texas in 1964, and he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1971.
After graduating, following in his father’s footsteps, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1971. He served in the role of communications and communications security for 4 tours of duty in Europe, serving in both Germany and England. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, and the Overseas Service ribbon. He retired from the Army in 1992 with the rank of Sergeant First Class.
He then served 18 and a half years with the US Post Office before retiring in Live Oak, TX 2012. John’s friends meant everything to him, and he spent much time in his retirement reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. During the last year, as his mobility diminished, his connection with his friends meant the world to him.
He is survived by his sister, Ann West (husband David West), two nieces, Anneliese Griego (husband Mike Griego and daughter Christianna Griego) and Annemarie VanAssche (husband James VanAssche, children David and Aurora Plascencia and Liliana VanAssche), many cousins in Germany, and his beloved dog Patches.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved dog Ralph.
A military funeral honors and committal service will take place at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX on October 20th at 11:15 at Pavilion 2. A reception will follow at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Rd, Universal City, TX 78148.
