John was born in Garysburg, North Carolina, to James and Louvenia Magee, and developed a lifetime love of animals and tractors on the family farm. While he aspired to deepen his farming roots into adulthood, he ended up on an entirely different route - a life in service. He served 23 years in the U.S. Army, retiring with the rank of Sergeant Major, and then commenced a second career as a civil servant. Beyond his career, John served everyone he met, contributing guidance and leadership in whatever capacity warranted.
John's military and civil service took him far from North Carolina, fostering a love of travel and learning about new lands and cultures. He made the world his home, and leaves behind friends across many countries.
John is preceded in death by brothers Jeremiah Magee, James Magee, Henry Magee, and sister Louvenia Magee.
He is survived by brother William Magee, sisters Fennolosia Martin and Maxine Greene, son John R. Magee II and daughter Louvenia Magee.
We all miss him deeply.
A Committal Service with Military Honors for John will be held Friday, October 11, 2024 from 2:15p.m. to 2:34p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, Shelter #2, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
