He joined the US Army after high school and served as a medic for 12 years. He got certified in Nuclear Medicine and continued serving in civil service.
He worked at Brooks Air Force Base at the Nuclear Medicine Department. He retired from Civil Service in 2011 when the base closed.
He was an only child. His parents Hollis and Mabel Turner also lived in San Antonio. Gene, as he was known by his friends, was his parent’s main caretaker. Hollis Turner, his dad, also served in the US Army and moved to San Antonio after retirement.
Gene had a passion for trains. His hobby was fixing, buying and selling trains. He got his first train at the age of 5 years old from his maternal grandfather.
He also loved his country and was a proud veteran. Gene loved helping his friends and anyone who needed help; strangers or not. He had a loving heart for his parents and all who knew him.
He was a Christian man and always prayed and gave thanks to God before every meal.
He remarried on Valentine’s Day 2019 to his longtime friend Alicia. They met at Brooks and were co-workers and friends for 20 years. He is survived by his wife Alicia Turner; his son Joseph E. Turner, Jr and wife Stephanie; his step-daughter Gricelda and his step-son Trinidad; step-grandchildren Stephanie, Luis, Yesenia, Santino, Serena and Mila.
