Julie was born May 6, 1924 in Hazelcrest, Illinois. She grew up in Illinois and graduated from Thornton High School in 1942 (Harvey, IL). After high school, she worked for the Illinois Central Railroad and modeled. She was named Chicago’s Miss Atomic Bomb in 1945.
She married Captain Anthony (Tony) Macaluso in 1946. They began their marriage moving around the South as Tony closed and reopened Army hospitals following World War II. They were stationed at Ft. Hood, New Orleans, Ft. Sam Houston, Red River Arsenal, Ft. Smith, and Atlanta. During that time, they had two children. Kenneth Bruce was born at Ft. Hood in 1947 and Barbara Jean was born at Ft. Smith in 1949.
Tony joined the Air Force in 1949 and the family moved to California (March AFB and then George AFB). The Air Force also took them to Japan (Tachikawa AB, and Washington Heights Tokyo), Illinois (Scott AFB), and Texas (Randolph AFB). The Macalusos moved to Wheaton, Maryland in 1961 where both children attended and graduated from high school. Julie and Tony moved to Universal City in 1967.
Julie was a formidable woman and if she set her sights on something, she achieved it. She was an avid golfer and the golf club singles and/or doubles champion every place she lived. She enjoyed bowling and her son remembers watching her roll a 277 (out of perfect 300). Her grandchildren believe her chocolate chip cookies were the best in the world. She was incredibly sharp and enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles.
Julie volunteered at the Universal City Public Library for almost 40 years.
She moved to the San Antonio Army Residence Community (ARC) in 2008 and lived there until her death. While at the ARC, she volunteered in the Library, Wellness Center, and the Chapel.
Julie was preceded in death by her husband, Tony; sister, Dorothy, and brothers, Allen and James.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth Macaluso; daughter, Barbara Schweitzer; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 2, 2019 at the Army Residence Community Chapel. Julia will be buried with her husband at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
Memorial donations can be directed to the Universal City Public Library, 100 Northview Drive, Universal City, TX 78148.
