He graduated high school in Poth TX and in 1964, joined the San Antonio Police Department. He served as an officer for 31 years, retiring in 1995.
He is survived by two sons, Kevin and wife Melissa, Ronald and wife Patti, stepson Sean Tompkins and wife Vantrese, and stepdaughter Shannon Tompkins, sisters Irene Buethe, Lorene Traeger, and Jeanette Costello. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Judy and stepson Stephen Tompkins.
A memorial service will be held Friday, February 24 at 10:00 am at Colonial Funeral Home in Universal City. In honor of Mel, the family ask that donations be made to The 100 Club of San Antonio, a local organization that serves families of fallen law enforcement officers and firefighters in Bexar County.
