Neal was born on October 17th, 1945 to Gerald and Gladys Nelbach in the town of Utica, New York. Shortly after Neal graduated from New Hartford High, he joined the United States Air Force in May of 1965.
On Valentine’s Day in 1976, he married Sandra Acha in San Antonio, Texas. Just over a year later, Neal and Sandra had a son, Chris. During Neal’s career, his family experienced living in various cities and countries including Germany, Greece, Florida and eventually and finally, San Antonio, Texas. Neal was married to Sandra until she passed in 1999.
Neal spent 39 years working for the USAF (22 active duty and 17 civil duty). While in active duty he reached the rank of Senior Master Sargent. During his career, Neal was awarded many honors. Several of his notable medals included the Air Force Longevity Service Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.
After 4 decades serving his country, Neal finally retired in 2003. Neal then found enjoyment through travel, spending time with friends and especially connecting with his son and grandchildren. His family cannot recall any event or occasion, no matter how small, in which Neal was not present and active. He was very proud of recently becoming a great grandfather and was excited to meet Melody, recently born in February of 2021.
Even in his final years, Neal still inspired his family and those around him. After almost 60 years of smoking, he accomplished his lifelong goal of quitting the habit and did so for over a year successfully. At age 73, he snorkeled the waters of Playa del Carmen's greatest Cenotes. During their last family cruise together, when asked to choose between levels of difficulty during a zipline adventure, Neal surprisingly chose the most adventurous course stating, “You only live once…make it count.”
Neal was predeceased by his parents, Gerald & Gladys, his sister Gayle and his wife Sandra. He is survived by his brother, Bryan, his son Chris, daughter in law Cristina, his granddaughters Araceli, Alina, Melania & Amelia, and great granddaughter Melody. Neal was kind, proud, strong, humble, and stoic. He will be missed by all that knew him.
