Major Boyd began his military career as a cadet at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia. Following graduation from college, he entered the Air Force and served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Upon retirement, he joined the civilian workforce for many years and concluded his active working career by serving as a Red Cross volunteer alongside his wife at Randolph Air Force Base. He was a past president of the San Antonio Philatelic Association and a longtime member of Toastmasters International.
