Romanita was born to Jose and Maria Medina Guel in Crescent Bend, Texas, where she was raised on the family farm alongside her thirteen siblings. As one of the older children, she spent much of her youth helping care for her brothers and sisters. During those early years, she also found time to visit with a handsome young neighbor who lived just down the hill—a young man named Matilde Troncoso. Their friendship blossomed into a lifelong love story, and together they shared sixty-five wonderful years of marriage.
Throughout those sixty-five years, Romanita and Matilde were blessed with eight children. In 1970, they moved their growing family from Crescent Bend to Cibolo, Texas, where they built a life and raised their family. Raising eight children was no small task, yet Romanita did so with unwavering love, dedication, and strength.
As her children grew older, Romanita devoted her time to serving her community. She was an active member of the Cibolo Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, where she was known for preparing her famous potato salad for events such as the Annual Cibolo Sausage Supper. She also volunteered with The Church of the Good Shepherd Bereavement Committee, often lending her culinary talents by preparing Spanish rice for gatherings and meals. Romanita enjoyed being a member of the Cibolo Senior Program, where she formed lasting friendships and took part in many activities.
She had a green thumb and could grow anything. In the kitchen, she was legendary. Whether it was her enchiladas, beans, rice, fresh tortillas, carrot cake or any meal she prepared, she had a special gift for making every dish unforgettable. Romanita was known throughout Cibolo for her tacos and fresh tortillas. If you were hungry, Mama T's house was the place to be.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. To many, she was affectionately known as Grandma, Tia Mana, Mama T, Romi, Mrs. Troncoso, or simply Mrs. T.
Romanita is preceded in death by her parents, Jose, and Maria Guel; her siblings, Guadalupe “Lupe" Guel, Endina "Annie" Puga, Joe Guel, Julian "Julio" Guel, Pablo "Paul" Guel, Adolfo "Loffie" Guel, Pedro "Peter" Guel, and Inocencio "Kakkie" Guel ; and her beloved son, Martin Troncoso, Sr.
She leaves behind her devoted husband of sixty-five years, Matilde Troncoso, Sr.; her children, Matt Troncoso, Jr. (Fiona), Manuel Troncoso (Tera), Miguel Troncoso (Donna), Mariano Troncoso (Terri), Carolina Troncoso Achay (Curtis), Juanita Troncoso-Treviño (Valentin), and Mario Troncoso (Eileen); nineteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; her siblings, Elida Gately (Tom), Corina Carrasco, Anna Flores (Jesse), and David Guel, Sr. (Nettie), along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Romanita was the calm in our storms, the voice of reason, and the spark that brought joy to every gathering. Her wit was quick, her heart was generous, and her love for her family was unwavering. She taught us the values of faith, hard work, resilience, compassion, and service—not only through her words, but through the example she set each day.
Though we miss her deeply, we find comfort in the countless lessons she taught us, the traditions she lovingly passed on, and the love she planted in each of our hearts. Her legacy will live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those whose lives she touched.
We celebrate you, Madre Nuestra. Thank you for your unconditional love, your patience, your sacrifices and for being a blessing to each of us.
Rest easy, Momma. We will take it from here. Love you more. ♥
