Tanya Jo Hammon, daughter of the late Lt. Col. John Graham Thomsen and Joan Elizabeth Elmore, an Air Force officer and homemaker, was born in Normal Illinois on August 10th, 1943. She passed away Sunday, July 24th at 9pm. She died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family and two dogs.
Tanya was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and passionate animal lover. She is a 1965 graduate of Auburn University and was a member of "Chi Omega" sorority. Tanya taught second grade prior to transitioning to a full-time homemaker. Her husband and soulmate Myles Daniel Hammon was an Air Force fighter pilot who lost his life in a plane crash in 1979. She chose not to remarry, and rather focused her energies on raising her children, cultivating wonderful friendships, helping others, and caring for her adored pets. Tanya loved all animals especially dogs and horses, and regularly donated to the Universal City Animal Shelter, Castleton Ranch Horse Rescue, and the Humane Society. She was immersed in the Christian community through her church home room and bible studies at the Universal City TX, United Methodist Church.
Tanya was an only child and the daughter of two only children. She has a very small but close family, and she truly was the matriarch and center of our family. She was mom, dad, coach, mentor, relationship counselor, and advisor in nearly all matters. She is survived by son Matt Hammon, son Hayden Hammon, daughter-in-law Rachel Hammon and grandson Myles Hammon.
A graveside service will be held at 9:15am, August 12th at Ft. Sam Houston Cemetery, Shelter #4, San Antonio, TX. It will be followed by a memorial and reception at Universal City United Methodist Church at 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Universal City TX Animal Shelter, Castleton Ranch Horse Rescue, or the Humane Society on her behalf.
