Vera Lucille McGuire

Vera Lucille McGuire, age 92, slipped away peacefully on August 27, 2026, at Heart & Home Manor in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by the love and memories she carried so deeply.

Born on October 13, 1933, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Vera was the cherished daughter of Celestine Williams Ealy and Christopher Weaver. From her earliest years, she carried a quiet strength, a sharp mind, and a deep belief in the power of education — values she poured into everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.

Vera devoted her life to helping others grow. She began her career teaching adult education, typing, and business, offering people the tools to build new futures. Later, as a guidance counselor at Beauregard Middle School and John McDonogh Senior High, she became a steady, encouraging presence for countless students. Even after retiring in 1986, her heart never left work. She returned to counseling at St. Mary’s Academy and later served as an ombudsman at Lafon Nursing Home, advocating for dignity, compassion, and care.

She was immensely proud of her education — a graduate of McDonogh #35 High School, Southern University in Baton Rouge, and Indiana University, where she earned her master’s degree in counseling. But more than the degrees, Vera treasured what learning made possible. She encouraged everyone — students, family, friends — to stay curious, stay open, and keep reaching for more.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Andrew McGuire, and her daughter Sharon, whom she held close in her heart every day.

She leaves behind her daughter, Andrea McGuire of Driftwood, Texas, and her grandson, David Andrew (Grovner) McGuire, who brought her endless joy. She is also survived by her brother, Wilbert Young, and his wife Paula; her nephew Paul H. Young (Lisa Young) and their sons Wil, Winston, and Paul Jr.; and a wide circle of extended family and lifelong friends. Many of them she considered sisters and brothers — chosen family who loved her deeply and will miss her warmth, humor, and wisdom.

At Vera’s request, and in keeping with the family’s wishes, no services will be held at this time. Her loved ones will honor her in the quiet ways she would have appreciated — through shared stories, cherished memories, and the continued pursuit of learning she inspired in so many.
