

Vernon L. Pope, died on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at the age of 92. Vernon was born in Canton, Oklahoma on January 9, 1921 to Cary and Lucile M. (Hurt) Pope. He Graduation from Geary High School in 1939 and moved to Devine, Texas in 1939. He worked at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas in the Training Department. In October 1942 he entered active military duty with the Army Air Corp. He spent his military duty during WWII at numerous bases as a Bombardier Air Force Navigator and in the pilot program. He was discharged in January 1946. He married Myra Lee Townsend on July 29, 1946. He relocated to Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas as a flight trainer and instructor in 1947. He was an assistant in OIC until retirement in 1987. He retired from civil service career with 47years of service. During his civil service he received the Civilian Meritorious Award and Numerous other achievements awards. After his retirement he and his wife Myra lived in McQueeney, Texas where he spent 35 years in the McQueeney Lions Club. During this time he received the “Crippled Children’s Camp Life Membership”. Vernon was an avid hunter, and golfer who enjoyed traveling throughout the entire United States with his family. His favorite trips were to Yellowstone National Park and Creede, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his Wife, Myra Lee Pope. He is survived by his daughter, Sheran Tilley and her husband Dr. Douglas Tilley, son, Wayne Pope and his wife Cynthia, granddaughters, Lisa Kay Tilley, Jennifer Elaine Pope, and Sarah Anne Pope, sister, Marianna Iverson and her husband Dave, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation and services will be held at Colonial Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 26, 2013. Visitation will begin at 9:00 A.M. until service time at 10:00 A.M. with military honors.
