

Chesapeake – Albert Wayne Hughes “Al”, 89, passed away peacefully in his daughter’s home, August 1, 2013. He was surrounded by his family, friends and caretakers. He was a lifetime member of Epworth United Methodist Church. Al lived most of his life in VA Beach, moving back to Chesapeake to his daughter Lisa’s home in 2013. He was predeceased by his loving wife Ivis Fleming Hughes, his sister Ida Mae Duren and grandson David Porter Hughes.
He is survived by his son, John Wayne Hughes and wife Jane, his daughter Susan Hughes Johnson and husband Billy (W.K.) Jr., his daughter Linda Hughes March and husband Michael (Mike), his daughter Lisa H. Osborn Woodley and husband Ross; grandchildren, John Wayne Hughes, Jr. and wife Rebekah, Christopher Ryan March and wife Cheryl, Blake Anthony Osborn and wife Maggie, and Whitney Marie March. He has two great-grandchildren, David and Kaleb Hughes; his sisters, Clara Ellis and Minnie Smith of Norfolk and their families.
After serving in the Army in World War II, Al worked in the roofing and sheet metal business, with his father. Al grew the business, including heating and air conditioning until retiring as owner of A. W. Hughes Sheet Metal Corp. in 1990. Al was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a Shriner and former Captain of the Mini Motors team. He loved to fish for flounder, bowl and play golf with his buddies and was very proud of his 2 holes in one, the most recent one at the age of 86. He enjoyed his family card games and playing poker with his friends. He vacationed at White Lake, NC with friends and family for over 53 years. We all loved going with him.
He was the best Daddy in the world and we will miss him very much.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Rd in Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Monday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.
