Barbara is predeceased by her husband, John Carper; and parents, Bernard “Chick” and Conrad McFarland. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Linda, her son Wayne, granddaughter Sarah Mayo (Anthony) and many extended family and close friends. While an only child, Barbara was blessed to have married into a large family who welcomed and loved her.
Barbara was born in Norfolk, Virginia on May 21, 1931. She attended Maury High School and graduated from Mary Washington College. She went on to teach Math at Norview High School until she left to raise her children. She enjoyed gardening, crafts and singing in the church choir. Barbara and John travelled all over the country in their retirement years. She especially loved the Outer Banks, where they owned a vacation cottage and spent many weeks each year for the last 30 years. Barbara was an active member of Princess Anne Plaza Baptist Church until her health prevented her from attending.
The family would like to thank Yvonne from Home Instead for being a devoted companion and caregiver for the last few years. They would also like to thank Janice, Helen and other support staff from Interim Healthcare for their support and compassionate care over the last few months.
Services will take place at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Rd Virginia Beach, Va 23462. A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2021 from 5:30-7pm. A funeral service will be held Friday, November 5, 2021 at 10:00 am with burial to follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. All are welcome to join the family in reception afterward. Masks required for all services.
