Betty B. Mitchell

Betty B. Mitchell, a beloved aunt, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, at the age of 79 years old, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, loyalty, and love. Betty Elaine Bowie was born on October 27, 1946, in La Plata, Maryland, to Bernard and Virginia Bowie, and was one of thirteen children in a large, close-knit family.

Betty was a proud graduate of La Plata High School in La Plata, Maryland and remained an active and devoted alumna throughout her life. Following high school, she began a long and successful career as a civil servant with the United States Navy, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic.

In 1969, Betty married the love of her life, Nathan Edward “Mitch” Mitchell. Together they built a beautiful life in Norfolk, Virginia, sharing nearly 50 years in the same home. Their marriage was one of deep love and partnership, lasting 27 years until Mitch’s passing in 1997.

Although Betty did not have children of her own, she poured her heart into her role as an aunt. She loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own children and took great pride in being part of their lives.

Betty had a love for travel and was always on the go, embracing life with curiosity and joy. She had a gift for making friends wherever she went, and everyone who knew her described her the same way—sweet, thoughtful, and genuinely kind. One of her most endearing traditions was sending birthday cards and gift baskets, a simple but meaningful gesture she kept up faithfully throughout her life.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mitch, as well as her parents and several siblings. She is survived by several siblings, including Anita Marsh, her nephew, Mike Mitchell, and his four sons, Pete, Tim, Nic, and Geoff, along with many other cherished family members and friends.

Betty will be remembered for her warm heart, her unwavering thoughtfulness, and the love she gave so freely to those around her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
