Born in the leap year 1928, Burgess was the older of two boys raised in Avon Lake Ohio on Lake Erie. His brother Thomas arrived two years later and together, the boys were inseparable. Burgess had a love of travel, by land and sea. Many summers were spent traveling the US by car and he spent many hours boating with his dad, though he was afraid of drowning. These interests eventually led him to the Navy where he spent 20 years sailing to exotic places before settling down in Virginia to raise his family with his wife, Joan and their five children. Throughout his life, Burgess’ great passion was cars. He loved vintage cars and convertibles, but mostly he liked to drive. Burgess ventured throughout the greater Chesapeake Bay Area well into his 90’s, curiously exploring “what’s around the next bend”.
He developed his vocation as a dental technician in the Navy and practiced this art until he retired. When his children were younger, they loved a good set of crazy teeth or fangs to impress their friends at Halloween. Fast with a cheeky joke, and light on his feet in the dance hall, Burgess was a favorite with both his church and square dance communities. Preceding him in death are his wife of 40+ years, his younger brother, Tom, and two of his sons, Robert Eric, and Brian Allison. He is survived by his son, Michael, his two daughters, Darlene Flynn, and Angela Attig, 13 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and many great great grandchildren. He will be sorely missed.
A memorial service for Burgess will be held Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Foundry United Methodist, 2801 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, Virginia 23452.
