Obituary of Byron Leonard Cummings Jr.
Byron L. Cummings, Jr., 80, went to be with the Lord on August 17, 2010. He was born on February 14, 1930 in Orange, Massachusetts, the son of the late Byron L. Cummings, Sr., and Catherine Byrne Cummings. Byron served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his military duty he started his career at the Northfield Chateau in Northfield, MA, beginning as a bellhop and was then trained into management. He also served in various hotel management positions throughout the Boston Area. From there he started his civil service career in the Boston Naval Shipyard as a welder and later moved to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard advancing to supervisor of safety and inspection on aircraft carriers. His philosophy was it was going to be the right way or no way. Byron was a wonderful and caring husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Nancy Young Cummings his sister June Cody and his granddaughter Mona Grenier. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Debbie and Mike Spalding; Brenda and Bob Gunther and grandchildren, Megan and Robbie Gunther; Sharyn and Stan Kelly and grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, Sean and Adam, great grandchildren, Ryan, Ashton, Morgan, Emily and Julia; Sheila and Steve Dubiel, grandchildren, Martin and Pam Greiner and great grandchildren, Tommy and Josh; son, Byron and Ginny Cummings and grandchildren, Greg and Katie Cummings and Kerry and Jen; his oldest brother, Edward Cummings and his adoring fiancé, Jean Strachan. The family will receive friends, Thursday, August 19, 2010 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM in Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Friday August 20, 2010 at 10:00 AM in Princess Anne Memorial Park, Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, 1110 N. Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach.
