Charles Daniel Byas, 81, passed away on June 15, 2012. He was born in Red Bank, New Jersey, on September 26, 1929, the son of the late Charles and Mary Byas. He lived in Jamaica, New York and graduated from Jamaica High School. Charles was employed by the City of New York as a Sanitation Worker before retiring in 1984 and moved to Virginia Beach in 1986. Charles proudly served his country as a Corporal in the United States Army and played the saxophone and tuba in the Army band. Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mildred, eldest son, Raymond; and sister, Eleanor.
Left to cherish his memory is his son, Calvin G. Byas and wife Darlene; daughter-in-law, Brenda Byas; 6 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; 2 nephews, Robert and Eugene Bethea who he helped raise and a host of cousins.
A celebration of Charles’ life will be held on Monday, June 25, 2012 at 2:00 pm in Rosewood – Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach with burial to follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 24, 2012 from 1 – 6 pm in the funeral home.
