Wayne passed away peacefully at home in Chesapeake, VA, on June 13, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer and other health challenges. He was a devoted husband and father, and a proud grandfather of three. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, and memories that will forever be cherished by his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Marlene Sawyer, his parents, Kelly and Mildred Sawyer, and his granddaughter, Tiffani Bailey. He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Bailey, son, Jeffrey Sawyer, grandson, Jordan Moore, granddaughter Hanna Bailey, brothers Ray, Glen, and Tim Sawyer, and sister, Linda Dunbar.
Wayne proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps before being medically discharged. He dedicated many years of hard work to the Tidewater Coal Inspection Bureau. Following his retirement, he continued to stay active by working in his family’s pawn business.
Wayne had a love for life and adventure. He enjoyed traveling with family, experiencing new places, and making memories along the way. His greatest joy came from his family, especially his grandchildren.
Wayne will be remembered for his strength, determination, and the love he gave to those around him. While our hearts are broken by his passing, we find comfort knowing he is finally at peace and no longer suffering. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
