Obituary of Edward Joseph Hampshire
Edward Joseph Hampshire (March 5, 1922 - Jan. 4, 2018) Edward J Hampshire, 95, passed away peacefully January 4, 2018 and was predeceased by his parents, Eva and Edward Hampshire, his loving wife of 72 years, Clare Matter Hampshire, sister Lucille H McGowan and brother, Roland C Hampshire. Survivors left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Carol Bryant and Leslee Hampshire, two sons Joe (Lorelei) and Larry Hampshire, three grandsons, Trey (Sarah), Adam (Rebecca) , Benjamin (Angie), three great grandsons, Noah, Ed, Cole, as well as many wonderfully loving relatives and friends. Ed was a WWII veteran serving in the U S Navy on both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters from 1942 - 1945 on the USS McComb. During this time he was also a Welterweight and middleweight golden gloves boxer. After an Honorable Discharge from the service, he worked for Norfolk’s Public Works, where he met his wife. Ed then changed careers and worked for 34 years as Construction Rep for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command where he completed his schooling through University of Maryland. He worked in Norfolk VA for all but 4 years, which took him to Bangor Washington to help work on the Trident Nuclear Sub base. Ed was a man of many talents and values. He built their first home with some help from family. He was an artist and could fix anything from automobiles to doll houses and loved doing it for his family and friends. He served as VP and President of Wards Corner Little League, Co-founder of senior little league in Fleet Park and was very active in youth sports coaching in Norfolk and VA Beach. He was a member of the Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church UCC. His passions were Family, fishing, hunting, golf. Ed was a long time member of Southwark Hunt Club where he shared many wonderful times with his sons and grandsons. As a prior member of Lake Wright Golf Club, Ed still enjoyed playing a friendly game of cards with his Lake Wright friends. Ed was a loving, generous husband, father and friend that gave of his heart and always placed his family first. Funeral Services will be held Friday, Jan. 12, 11:00a.m. at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N Witchduck Rd, VA Beach, VA 23462. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.
