

Edwin Andrew “Doc” Schoen passed away on January 9, 2017. He was born at the farm home of his parents, John Andrew and Grace Eileen Bicknell Schoen, in Graham County, KS on March 15, 1922. He was a graduate of Lenora High School and Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 1944. Doc was a lifetime member of the KSU Veterinary Medicine Alumni Association and an avid fan of K-State football.
Edwin and Peggy L. Crawford were married on Oct. 29, 1944, at her parents’ home in Newport, KY. Peggy passed away on March 14, 1986, while they were vacationing in the Dominican Republic.
Doc and Peggy established the first Virginia Beach veterinary hospital in March of 1947 and operated the Beach Pet Hospital until Doc retired in 1987.
A World War II Veteran, Edwin was a Captain in the U.S. Army and served in the 5th Service Command, U.S. Army Veterinary Corps as a meat inspector. He was honorably discharged in 1946. During the war, he always mentioned that he had the opportunity to meet up in Germany for a few days with his uncle, George Bicknell and brother, Doyle, who were also serving in the U.S. Army.
Edwin was a member of the Oceana Coffee Club, Oceana Lions Club, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Virginia State Veterinary Medicine Association and the National Veterinary Medicine Association.
Edwin was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; parents; siblings, Lola, Viola and Doyle; and longtime friends, Jean Webb and Jonathan Henry.
Doc is survived by extended family, Pam Webb Henry, Holly Henry Ecimovic, Robert Webb Jr.; friend, Jan Barco; the “Beach Pub” friends; and the Burger King Coffee & Domino Club. He also is survived by his many loving nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Mon., Jan. 16, 2017 at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA.
A funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tues., Jan. 17, 2017 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Virginia Beach Rescue Squad.
