

Elizabeth B. Hitchings passed away peacefully on October 18th 2024, in the city she was born in, Norfolk, Virginia. At 98 years old, “Libby” lived a full and vibrant life; leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and faith impacting many around the world including cherished loved ones in Bermuda. Libby worked for the City of Virginia Beach’s treasurer’s office for over 25 years, retiring with the title of Deputy Treasurer. She was a devoted woman of her Christian faith and was a member of Kempsville Baptist Church since 1961, as well as attending Pea Hill Christian Church at Lake Gaston on weekends spent at her home away from home. Libby was greeted into heaven by her parents William and Betty Barfield, Merritt Hitchings, her husband of 65 years, their son Edward and son-in-law James Helbig, as well as her sister Marjorie Fones. Elizabeth is survived by her two daughters Mary Frances and Lynda, beloved grandchildren Megan, Joseph and his wife Ashley, and their father Joey,two sisters, Betty Hayhurst and Pauline Fitch, in addition to many nieces and nephews. Until we meet again at the gates of heaven, Libby’s spirit will live in our hearts and be remembered fondly over Hallmark Christmas movies, westerns, and every bowl of ice cream. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted with gratitude to Kempsville Baptist Church or Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad.
A visitation for Elizabeth will be held Thursday, October 24, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462. A funeral service will occur Thursday, October 24, 2024 at 11:00 AM, 601 N Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462. A graveside service will occur Thursday, October 24, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St, Norfolk, Virginia 23505.
