Elvie Speight, Sr.
April 29, 1936 – September 14, 2018

On Friday, September 14, 2018, Elvie “Red” Speight, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather went to be with his Lord and Savior at age 82.
Elvie was born on April 29, 1936 in Chesapeake, VA to Raynor and Helen Speight. He graduated from Great Bridge High School in 1954 and lettered in multiple sports. After high school Elvie enlisted in the U.S. Marines were he proudly served his country for three years. After leaving the service he entered the apprentice program at Norshipco where he graduated after 4 years and continued to work for 42 years. He retired from Norshipco as operation’s manager for commercial programs. After retirement he went to work for Cahoon Plantation Golf course where he enjoyed working with customers and the community.
Elvie had a passion for youth, sports and church. He played and coached in the church and city league softball and basketball. He served as both an elder and deacon in his church. He loved the time he spent together with his wife traveling and doing life. He was known for his wit, and his kind and compassionate spirit.
Elvie was preceded in death by his father, Raynor, and his mother, Helen as well as sister Thelma Ferrell. He is survived by his wonderful wife Jennifer of many years whom he wholeheartedly cherished, his two children, Randy Speight and wife Margie, Carrie Gentile and husband Tony, three granddaughters Nicole Roccaforte, Victoria Greene, and Taylor Banks, and grandson Derek Speight. Four great grandchildren Ben, Caroline, Micah and Emma, his brother Kenny and wife Rhoda.
Family will gather on Monday September 17th 2018 from 6:00-8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday September 18th 2018 at 11:00 am. Both will take place at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home on Witchduck Rd. in VA Beach.
