She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, and will be greatly missed. Esty was born in Kansas City, Missouri on August 2, 1931 and was a graduate of Lindenwood College. She began riding horses at age four, taught horseback riding for several years, and showed horses all over Missouri.
Esty was a long-time member of Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, and put her hope and trust in God. She volunteered her time with many service projects throughout her life. Esty was a devoted wife to her husband of 58 years, Richard L. Vollrath (deceased). Together, they enjoyed traveling, ballroom dancing, and spending time with family and friends.
Esty lived life to the fullest! Her hobbies included tennis, dancing, sewing, and flower arranging. To say Esty was a skilled gardener is an understatement; she had the greenest of thumbs and her gardens were always spectacular. She loved sharing “starts” and seeds of plants and flowers with others so that they could enjoy their beauty also.
Mostly, Esty deeply loved her family and friends. We will miss her dearly, but we know we will be reunited again with her one day.
Survivors include her five children: Richard Vollrath Jr., Robert Vollrath and his wife Mary, Margaret Zimmerman and her husband Paul, Michael Vollrath, Laura McMahon and her husband Shawn; nine grandchildren: Laura Compo and her husband Tony, Amanda Augustine and her husband Joey, Thomas Zimmerman and his wife Kristin, Theresa Vollrath and her partner Chris, Robert Vollrath Jr. (deceased), Andrew Zimmerman and his wife Sindu, Jeffrey Zimmerman and his wife Chi, Jeremy McMahon, and Kaitlyn McMahon; and eight great-grandchildren: Hudson, Juniper, Jordan, Bennett, Marigold, Lily, Rae, Taylor.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 North Witchduck Road, Va. Beach, VA 23462.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 3 p.m. August 31, 2024 at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, 19th and Pacific Avenue by the Pastor Tim Craig. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Esty’s memory to your favorite charity.
