Foster C. Spruill

Foster C. Spruill, 94, passed away on October 23, 2014. He was one of twins born on December 4, 1919 to the late James H. and Minnie Mae (Swain) Spruill in Hickory, Virginia. His wife of 70 years Ethel M. Spruill precedes him in death.

Mr. Spruill retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1960 after 21 years of service. One of his favorite duties was on the icebreaker USCGC Westwind, making two trips to the Artic and one trip to the Antarctic.

He retired again from Newport News Shipbuilding after 20 years of service, where he was employed as a Quality Control Inspector on submarines.

He was a member of the Chief Warrant Officers Association, a member of the “ROMEO” club (Retired Old Men Eating Out) where he enjoyed going to lunches with his retired Coast Guard friends. Foster was also a member at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Left to cherish his memory are his son James C. Spruill and wife Ella; 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2014 from 6-8 PM at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 11AM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 224 S. Military Hwy, Norfolk VA. A burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. You may offer your condolences at www.kellumfuneralhome.com.
