Gary Bernerd Isley, 71, peacefully ended this life’s journey on May 18, 2025, after a brief illness. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, July 6, 1953, he was a graduate of Lake Taylor High School.
His parents instilled in him a strong work ethic and a desire to learn. Always mechanically gifted, he loved cars and became a highly respected auto mechanic, and enjoyed driving race cars at a local racetrack. He then worked as Service Manager at Kramer Tire and then Customer Service for Northern Tool. His love of computer technology led him to change careers and become an IT guru. He retired in 2018 from his position as Warehouse Manager with Tidewater Power Equipment. In retirement, he indulged his love of his yard, photography, writing poetry, and learning all he could on topics of interest from birds to politics to state-of-the art computer technology to string theory. Being multi-talented and meticulous, he was able to help most anyone solve a multitude of problems. The overriding philosophy of his life is perhaps summed up by his favorite quote: “Be the change you want to see in the world” – Mahatma Gandhi.
He is survived by his wife and partner of 21 years, Gabbi Isley; two children Katherine Greene (husband Neil) and Kevin Isley; three siblings Elizabeth Isley, Melissa Gale Isley, and Missy Isley Viohl and husband Kenny; three grandchildren Serena, Maya and Amanda; and great grandson Riley. Loving uncle to Solomon (Sollie) Kaplan, Shayna Kaplan, Ali Bresenoff, Jason Isley and Bernard Isley. Also survived by his long-time friends CL and Ginger Griffin, with whom he shared many happy times; special friend Ann Vaughn; and his feline buddy Pretty Boy.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Bernerd Gale Isley and Anne Elizabeth Isley, and nephew Benjamin Kaplan.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial donations be made to your local Food Bank, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or any animal rescue organization.
The family would like to acknowledge the loving care provided by the staff of Virginia Beach General Hospital and Virginia Beach Health and Rehab.
