Master Police Officer Harold Suggs used not his gun, but his heart and was one of those Naturals we relied upon 

His belief of God’s will to provide Justice and equality to every life he touched shined through. He protected the innocent and delivered justice to the guilty.   

He hide the pain he endured performing his role in life as a Police Officer, thru humor and satisfying his need to make everyone feel special and encouraged them to be more, allowed him peace. 

As a husband, Harold Suggs raised the bar and not only provided for my mother, but was her best friend, her lover and a father to three boys he acquired as a package deal (along with the two daughters, he already had) to which He taught to become both kind and caring men. 

To my mother,   Harold never left you.    Both of You are still married and still in love, If we understand ourselves seeking the aches and pain for own sake- the less the better…The marriage between your husband and yourself is preserved and the more joy there can be in this marriage between the past and the present, the stronger and joyful it shall be we you are together again. 

And to you Harold, I shall hold the honor and respect as a man, I shall fulfill the trust and respect you both expect of me and gave me in both life and death.

HD came into my life when I was a grown man and did not need the guidance the rest of the Kids did.   He was there for me to pass the torch so to speak because I always had to be the man of the family. He came along and stepped in and cared for and loved my Mom and treated her like a princess I never had to worry anymore and I had the utmost absolute respect for him for doing that. HD was so easy going and laid back and had more patience than anyone I knew and I had nothing but respect for him. When I close my eyes I see HD being laid back playing the guitar.   I brought HD a truckload of pine wood he was just so elated and happy and thankful for that.   There are a lot more emotions that are hard to put in words and just need to remain private; he was the closest thing to a Dad that I had known.

Helene, My sincere condolences and regrets that I just found out the details Weds evening. My fondest memory is when Harold and I responded to a house on Salem Rd and caught two teens, one in the closet, and one had run into the field, that had broken into the residence. Also, the many great pizza's we enjoyed from your restaurants over the years-on S Plaza and then on Lynnhaven Pky. We all shared many years of happiness and friendship and He will be missed. It has been over 17 years since Jeanette, and I catch myself having a hard time believing she is gone. May your Faith help strengthen your path in the days ahead. Jerry Fenske, Callands, VA

I know that you spoke with Jake today at the service, but I wanted you to know that Harold made an impression on my first years with the VBPD as well. A Little Girls Memories

• Horsey back rides up and down and up and down the hallway sometimes to the wee hours
• Outdoor bubble baths in my first pool – until you ran it over with your RED truck!
• Having my stomach pumped – Oil - thirty weight you said!
• Moving to the country – PUNGO here we come!!!
• Raising farm animals – EIEIO- and on our farm we had some ducks, chickens, cows, pigs……
• Teaching me to shoot my first rifle and not at glass windows, or the black birds – you get the idea. Oh, yeh – shoot first – maim-and then ask questions – police lessons at their best!
• My first time pulled over – dad’s car – tags expired – and you knew better – that’s what the officer said!
• My first car – stick shift – you teaching me how – no patience – said I’d couldn’t  learn – taught myself – remember I’m hard headed too!!!!
• My first date – rifle in hand – already ran his plates – and gave him the itinerary for the evening. And you wonder why I didn’t date through high school.
• You becoming a grandpa – watching you play –laugh- mentor – teach –love – earn gray hairs – increasing the bald spot I so loved to kiss when saying goodbye!
• Being there whenever I was in need -  offering a shoulder to cry on – always making me laugh no matter how bad I felt – Dr. Shavargos’ prescription  you said! Laugh two times and call me in the morning.
• Story telling – you were the BEST!!!! – Fairytale legends that are still recited among the coffee and doughnut breaks with Va. Beach Polices’ finest.  Stories which provide your loving family with laughter and give us life’s little lessons the HD way!!!!

Stories……….Your stories which have given us the strength to get through these rough hours.  Laughter from your spirit – a spirit which will forever flood our hearts and remind us of the awesome man you were and will always be.
For this little girl – these are but a few of my many memories I carry deep within my heart- Memories of my daddy which I love and will miss so dearly. Until I see you again – keep telling your stories – God and his angels need some laughter too. On the wings of a snow white dove he will spread your warmth among mankind.

Harold I will miss you and our time in the car.Harold was my first training officer as a Va. Beach police officer.My first day on patrol we saved a boys life.I will always remember you and your influence on me and for letting us hunt on the fair grounds. Your family has lost one great Dad and Grandfather.

Come here, Cowboy....That is when I knew I was in trouble. You only had to tell me once. I was so happy when you married my mother and then you treated her (your Girl) like a queen and set the standard I have to follow and will as you did with respect,kindness and everything else you taught me, I will.

Dear Crystal,

Sorry to hear of your father's passing.  I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Harold, You will be missed, I am so happy to have had the chance to work with you at the 3rd Pct back in the 80's. You had to be one of if not the funniest guys to work with. You made musters a lot of fun with both your stories and your helpfulness. Thats not including your stories about walking a beat in Norfolk, and showing us how you use to be able to bounce your wooden "Billy Stick" off the sidewalk. Then our squad parties at you and Helens rest. they were so much fun. Harold thank you for the wonderful times, stories and laughs we had along with your help. You will be missed.

I feel blessed to have known such a wonderful and pleasant man, he was truelly a joy to see on a daily basis for his radiation treatments. Alwyas upbeat and full of jokes, he will be missed..

Grandpa, I will miss all your funny stories you used to tell and all the funny jokes you would say.You would make pork chops and the to die for mashed potatoes. You also would watch fox news every-time i was over.The last time i saw you for two days before you died when i was about to leave you said how was proud of me you were.  I will miss you Grandpa

 My Grandfather was a truly loving man. He may have not worn his heart on his sleeve, but his compassion and caring nature shined none the less. His unique humor and unshakable love helped me to grow into who I am today, and I am blessed to have been a part of his life. I love and miss him.

Harold, you will be missed.  I was honored to be called your friend.  Back in 1974 when I was a new dispatcher you made me feel part of the "police department family" and would bring me breakfast and talk to me at 3am when I was on the graveyard shift.  I will never forget your ascerbic wit and dry sense of humor.  You left a mark that remains with me today.  Thank you for your friendship.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I worked with Harold for 20 years. Not only was he was a great officer, he was a true friend. May you rest in peace my dear friend. You always knew where you stood with Harold.

I just want to say that im sorry for the loss of suggs and he will be missed very much. We shared the same birthday and to us it was special. I have many memories of sharing it with him as his little turkey. He was my god father and he always looked out for me even when i did think i need it.He was a great person and a big part of the family.I loved him so much. He will be missed.

We knew Suggs as our godfather. He was loving,caring, and would make you laugh until you cried. I remember that my mom and dad left me,Lisa and Regina over at his house because they where rushing my Pop to the hospital, My Pop passed away that night and Uncle Suggs told us he had died and he just held onto us and let us cry as loud as we could until we fell asleep. Uncle Suggs also loved motorcycles and he used to ride with his daughters who would ride on his shoulders. He managed to talk my mom Marcia Williams into to riding with him, she said yes but told him he could not go that fast. Well lets just say when the ride was over Uncle Suggs had claw marks on his chest from her fingernails grabbing him so tight and screaming the entire way. I could go on and on about all the great times with him and his family. I love you all very much and now I know we have one more angel looking over us in Heaven. May the Lords love and strenght give you comfort thru this sad time.

I worked with Harold on the VBPD and have fond memories of him singing and playing music.  He was a wonderful person and friend that I will miss.  May God bless and keep you.
