He was born on Labor Day, September 5, 1938, to Jesse and Sadie Melton. He was the youngest of 9 children and the last surviving.
He grew up modestly on a farm in Hubert, NC before he joined the Navy in 1956. He met his future wife Ada Mae Pack through his brother Robert in 1960. After a short courtship, he reenlisted in the Navy, got married in a snowstorm, and began their 65-year adventure together.
He served his country proudly for 20 years and retired as a CPO E7 Navy Chief. After the Navy, he worked for Furmanite before deciding he wanted to be his own boss. He started WD Contracting Services with fellow friend Don Morris. He was a very smart and savvy businessman for 26 years.
Walker was an honest and proud man who would do anything for anyone who needed help. But he never wanted to take recognition – he was a behind-the-scenes kind of man.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Ada Mae Melton (Pack): daughter, Cheryl Kuchem (John) of Virginia Beach; granddaughter, (and apple of his eyes) Rachel Kuchem White (Chris) also of Virginia Beach. He had many nieces, nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law; too many to count.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Judes, CHKD, and Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
