Jane Louis Lane, beloved Mother, elementary school teacher and Navy wife, passed away on November 2, 2023 in Virginia Beach. She was 94 years old. A 1950 graduate of Goucher College, she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. At Girl's Latin School in Baltimore, she enjoyed field hockey, tennis, ice skating, and fencing. She met her life's partner, Charles Morgan Lane, at the Naval Academy in 1946, and they were married in Baltimore in 1950. Ensign C.M. Lane flew close air support for embattled Marines at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea in 1950, as depicted in the movie "Devotion." He also played a key role in carrier operations during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.
First and foremost a teacher, Mrs. Lane spent more than 30 years in elementary education. She taught fourth grade at Wroxeter-on-Severn in Arnold, Maryland. She taught first grade at Norfolk Academy from 1966 to 1979, educating a new generation of leaders, and at Malibu Elementary in Virginia Beach.
Fluent in French, Mrs. Lane travelled extensively in Europe, the Philippines, and Africa--from Algeria to Zaire--celebrating holidays with family. She sang in the choir of Old Donation Episcopal Church for 40 years.
Survivors include her son, Robert L. Lane and daughter-in-law, Meena J. Sehwani, of Williamsburg, and six grandchildren. Her elder son, Charles H. Lane of Charlottesville, died in 2016. Widowed for 44 years, Mrs. Lane never re-married. She is interred with her husband at Rosewood-Kellum memorial park in Virginia Beach. Family and friends will gather to celebrate her long and accomplished life.
