Obituary of Larry Randal Joyner
Larry Randal Joyner, 76, died Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach, VA from complications due to Covid-19. Larry was born in Marlboro County, SC on September 13, 1944 to Lloyd Allen Joyner and Margaret Louise Mims. In October of 1961, Larry started his career in the United States Navy and served 20 years. He is a proud veteran of the Vietnam War. He received numerous awards throughout his Naval career and eventually retired as a Chief Petty Officer (E-7). After Larry retired from the United States Navy, he continued to serve his country by working for the Civil Service at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA until his untimely passing. Larry spent his free time golfing, fishing, spending time with his great-grandchildren and as the huge Redskins fan that he was, watching football games. He always enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends laughing and making memories. Larry never passed up a moment to share his words of wisdom. He had such a giving and generous heart and he touched the lives of so many people. Larry was a devoted husband to his late wife Sandra Joyce Joyner, who passed in 2002 due to her long battle with cancer. He remarried in 2006 to his loving wife Patricia Joyner who survives him. He is also survived by his brother Jack Joyner; son Edward Joyner and his wife Charlotte; daughter Barbara Hood and her husband Donald; 3 granddaughters, Amanda Teifke and her husband Jayme, Laura Wilson and her husband Christopher, and Shawna Alexander and her husband Kenyatta; 2 step-daughters, Angie Milliman and her husband Adam, and Joyce Swafford; 9 great grandchildren, whom he was affectionately known as “Pop Pop”, listed by oldest to youngest, Nova Milliman, Alanna Wilson, Robert Teifke, Winter Milliman, Tristan Wilson, Cameron Alexander, Tetra Swafford, Connor Wilson and Kaylynn Teifke; several nieces and nephews; as well as good friends of the family, Tammy and Doug Rheuark. He is preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Margaret Joyner, wife Sandra Joyce Joyner and son Robert Joyner. Larry was an active member of the congregation of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Virginia Beach, VA. He frequently served as an usher during church services and was a devout Lutheran who was very proud of his church. The family requests in lieu of flowers that you please make any and all donations to Emmanuel Lutheran Church: 3900 Virginia Beach Blvd. Virginia Beach, VA 23452. The viewing will be held Monday, April 19th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home: 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. The funeral service will take place at Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Tuesday, April 20th at 11:00 am. After the funeral service, we will meet for the committal service at 12:30 pm at Rosewood Memorial Park: 631 N. Witchduck Rd. Virginia Beach VA. 23462.
