Marlyn Bloxsom Whalen

Mrs. Whalen was born in Norfolk, VA on March 3, 1932, the daughter of Lee Murphy Bloxsom and Mabel Cake Bloxsom. She graduated from Maury high school in the class of 1950. Soon after graduation, she was appointed a Deputy Clerk in the corporation court of the City of Norfolk (now the Circuit Court). She worked in this position for approximately 9 years. She worked for about 6 years for Retail Credit company in the steno pool doing insurance investigation reports and then in 1973, she received an appointment as a Deputy Clerk in the US District Court, where she stayed until retirement in May 1996. She retired as a Deputy Clerk/Supervisor in the Criminal Division of the court, where she was the Ramrod of the Rocket Docket.

Mrs. Whalen loved cruises and had taken several of them. Her favorite was a 15-day cruise to Alaska.

She was a member and former Sunday school teacher at Indian River Baptist Church for many years. She was also a member of NARFE, chapter 1682.

Mrs. Whalen was predeceased by her husband John Joseph Whalen, III (Joe) to whom she had been married for over 50 years, and by her daughter Kim Whalen Stevenson. She was also predeceased by her sister Norma Lee Gates, brother Pat Bloxsom, and his wife Earlene and her brother-in-law Michael T Whalen. She is survived by a son, John J Whalen, IV (Jay) and his wife Dottie Jo, her Son-in law John R Stevenson. She has two beautiful granddaughters, Kelli Marie Stevenson and Megan Lee Stevenson, these two young ladies were the apples of her eyes. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on July 8, 2025, from 9:00 – 10:00 AM at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, VA, with a funeral service beginning at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Indian River Baptist Church, 1600 Laurel Ave. Chesapeake, VA 23325, or to a charity of your choice.
