Michael “Mike” Lamar Brewton, 68, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away on September 27, 2026. He was born on January 26, 1958, in Pensacola, Florida, to Leon and Marie Harris Brewton of Robertsdale, Alabama.
Mike graduated from Bayside High School in Virginia Beach before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force. He entered active duty on May 19, 1977, and served honorably until May 18, 1981. He often shared fond memories of his time stationed in Alaska.
Following his military service, Mike began a career as a Mechanical Engineering Technician at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where he worked until his retirement. His career reflected his technical skill, dedication, and thirty-five years of continued service.
Mike was quiet and mostly kept to himself, but behind the mustache was a wonderful sense of humor and a generous heart. Family members will remember being awakened for Saturday morning chores to the sound of Bells by Pink Floyd, and everyone looked forward to his birthday and holiday cards, which were always funny—and usually right on point.
Mike loved railroads, trains, road trips, fishing, and computer games. He enjoyed traveling and putting miles behind him simply for the pleasure of the journey.
Roller coasters held a special place in his heart. A longtime passholder at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Mike loved taking family members to the park just as much as he enjoyed going by himself. Those solo trips also gave him plenty of opportunities to claim one of his favorite spots--the front car of any roller coaster.
Mike is survived by his sister, Margie Briggs, and her daughters, Lisa Wood and Regina Dawson; his brother, Martin Brewton, and his children, Victoria Chancery and Andrew Brewton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Marie Brewton, and his sister, Janice Skipper, who is survived by her sons, Donald, Ronald, and Lonnie Skipper. Great nieces and nephews include Kyle Teague, Cameron Wood, Deanna Genthe, Logan Spruill, Genoa Benecke, Bret Dawson, Drew, Darien, and Delynne Chancery, Justin Brewton, Rose Cochran, Tye, Ryan, Taylor, and Alex Skipper, Noah Wilmer, and Samantha, Jack, and Bella Cleveland, and an additional 18 great-great nieces and nephews.
In a celebration fitting for someone who found so much joy in roller coasters, road trips, and sharing adventures with his family, Mike’s family will honor him with a “Last Ride” Celebration of Life at Busch Gardens Williamsburg on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with an opening ride at 5:00 p.m. Words of Remembrance will be shared in the Black Forest area of the park between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Family and friends are invited to join in remembering Mike in the way he would have appreciated most—not with a traditional service, but with family, laughter, memories, and one last ride.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mike’s memory to the American Heart Association.
May the road ahead be open, the music be loud, and the front car always be waiting.
