

Nancy Lane Russell, 92, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026, with family members at her bedside. She was born on February 20, 1934, in Galax, VA, the youngest of nine children—one brother and eight sisters.
Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Tom Russell, as well as her eight siblings and other relatives with whom she shared close and loving relationships.
Nancy was a deeply kind, giving, and caring person who believed in helping others whenever she could. She devoted herself to caring for members of her family, including providing hands-on care at home for her own mother and for her sisters during their final years. She gave generously of herself with compassion that touched many lives.
Family was at the center of Nancy’s world. She deeply loved her relatives and treasured the many holiday traditions that she and her husband created. She was especially proud of her family and never missed an opportunity to tell others about the people she loved and their accomplishments.
Nancy is survived by her two children, Mickey Hurst and Karen Nelson; her two godchildren, Jay Snell and Daniel Snell; and their respective families. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other loved ones who will carry her memory forward.
Nancy cherished her closest friends, Jackie and Junior Pavey, and was grateful for the kindness and assistance of her neighbors. She enjoyed keeping in touch through Facebook, Messenger, and email, finding ways to remain connected with the people who mattered to her.
She took great pride in her home, keeping it clean, comfortable, and inviting for visitors. Over the years, she also lovingly cared for the cats and dogs who were part of her life.
Nancy’s life was defined by love, generosity, family, friendship, and caring for others. She leaves behind a family who knew how deeply she loved them and who will remember with gratitude the many ways she gave of herself throughout her long and meaningful life.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
