Nevin Pietrzak, 85, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2024. Nevin was born on March 4, 1939 in Istanbul, Turkey to the late Hamiyet Güçlü and Ali Adem. Nevin was married to John Pietrzak for 60 years, he passed in 2019. They met in Istanbul and married in 1959. Thus, began their life long journey of international travel while raising a family. Courtesy of the United States Navy, their travels would extend from Turkey to Japan, Alaska, Maryland, Virginia, Morocco, Spain, Pennsylvania, until finally settling in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Nevin embraced the people and traditions she encountered, exposing her family to the rich fabric of world culture. Nevin was also an active member in the local international community including NATO and the American Turkish Association. A true passion of hers was gardening, her backyard was the botanical gardens of Virginia Beach. Nevin was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church.
Left to cherish her memory are: daughter, Nevin Ann Unokur and her husband Serdar; two sons, John D. Pietrzak and his wife Pamela, and Errol S. Pietrzak; five grandchildren, Nicholas A. Pietrzak, Tristan M. Pietrzak (Diana), Max A. Pietrzak, Logan T. Pietrzak (Chanci), and Lukas T. Pietrzak; three great-grandchildren, Noah A. Pietrzak, Miles A. Pietrzak, and Deanna I. Pietrzak; brother, Engin Güçlü (Dilek); niece, Ebru (Adrian); nephews, Deniz Güçlü (Lauren) and Turhan Özüşen; brother-in-law, Stanley Pietrzak; sister-in-law, Mary Pietrzak; Fatma Streett (Craig) who she regarded as her own daughter; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins in Turkey and the United States.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 5, from 5-7:00 PM at Rosewood & Kellum funeral home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia, 23462. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345, Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, Virginia, 23462. Burial will be at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery at a later date. You may offer condolences at www.kellumfuneralhome.com
