Norman was born in Hymera, Indiana, October 26, 1924, son of Wayne and Elzo (Phegley) Hammond. He was a graduate of Wiley High School 1941, Indiana State Teacher's College 1948 with a Bachelor of Science, and served his country as an officer in the US Navy.
He married Doris June Stott August 27, 1949 and was married for 67 years. Together they had 4 children.
Norman began his career as a teacher, then moved to a publishing company selling magazines where earning as much money in 4 months as he did as a teacher in one year. He then continued a 32 year career with Chemcentral in Fort Wayne. Our Dad was an avid golfer, fisherman and loved adventure. He was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, IN and Faith Baptist Church in Winter Haven, FL.
He is survived by his children, Carol Bowers (Dave) of Virginia Beach, VA, Robert Hammond of Winter Haven, FL, Cathy Jelsema of Virginia Beach, VA, and Dwight (Kay) of Manhatten, IL; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and one brother-in-law. Norman is preceded in death by his wife, Doris and brother, Harold.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on November 2, 2019 at the Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, with Pastor Clark Halstead officiating. Internment will be at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, Virginia.
